Context

In 2019 I designed the costumes for kNOwn Face, an interactive dance piece by choreographer Chen-Wei Lee at the Taiwan International Festival of Arts. The piece is about living in front of an audience — the likes, the angles, the constant performance of being seen.

The costume unfolds in four layers, stripped away as the dance goes on: Hide, Reveal, Struggle, and finally Self. Each layer had to survive real choreography — sweat, floor work, quick changes — so every seam was tested in rehearsal, not on paper.

It premiered at the National Experimental Theater in Taipei on March 8, 2019. Watching the audience raise their phones at a piece about raising phones was the strangest, most satisfying moment of the whole project.
